The Big Bang Never Stopped
A November night of galaxies through borrowed binoculars, and the realization that the beginning of the universe is not an event in the past. You are standing in it.
We drove out to the dark again in November, the same road past the last streetlight, and this time a friend brought serious binoculars, and serious binoculars change everything.
With the naked eye, the Andromeda galaxy is a faint smudge you have to trick your vision into catching. Through good glass, braced on the car roof, it becomes unmistakable: an actual other galaxy, a tilted disc of ancient light, a trillion suns filed under one soft glow. Everyone took turns. Everyone did the gasp. And somewhere in the rotation, my friend asked the question that carried the night: so all of this came from the Big Bang? One explosion, that long ago?
And I got to share the correction that rearranged my own head when I first met it, because the picture almost everyone carries is subtly, wonderfully wrong.
The Big Bang was not an explosion in space, somewhere, long ago, that scattered debris into a waiting void. There was no waiting void, and no somewhere. The Big Bang was the expansion of space itself, everywhere at once, and, this is the part that changes the night sky forever, it has not finished. The galaxies are not flying apart through space like shrapnel. The space between them is stretching, right now, tonight, measurably. Edwin Hubble caught it in 1929: nearly every galaxy, receding, and the farther away, the faster, exactly what a stretching fabric does to the points drawn on it. The expansion is not history. It is current events. We do not live after the Big Bang. We live inside it, mid-bang, in an ongoing beginning that is fourteen billion years old and still unfolding in every direction at once.

That is only half of the thing I love. The other half is what the first moments made, because the universe's entire later career was packed into its opening chapters: the hydrogen forged in the first minutes is the same hydrogen in every glass of water you have ever drunk. The energy released then is, transformed and re-transformed, the energy in the coffee we poured from the thermos, in the muscles holding the binoculars, in the thought you are thinking now. Conservation of energy is the sternest law in physics: nothing created, nothing destroyed, only changed in form. Follow any calorie in your body backward far enough, through the food, the sunlight, the sun's fusion, the ancient collapsing clouds, and you arrive, every single time, at the same address. The beginning. Still spending itself, currently, as you.
The bang is not something that happened to the universe. The bang is what the universe is, and we are a place where, for a few decades, it wakes up and looks at itself through binoculars.
On the drive back, heater on, everyone quiet in the after-sky way, I thought about how much of my own story I used to file as finished history. Things that happened, chapters closed, energy spent. Four years of this notebook say otherwise, and now cosmology co-signs. Nothing that ever happened to you is over, it has only changed form. The old years are not debris behind you. They are the expansion you are made of, still unfolding, still convertible, the way the first minutes' hydrogen is tonight's rain. The beginning never stopped beginning.
You are not the aftermath of your past. You are its current form, mid-transformation, with the whole original energy conserved and in your account.
Andromeda, for the record, is coming our way, the one great exception to the recession, due to arrive in four billion years. Even galaxies, given time, close the distance to what they love. Plenty of time. Space is patient, and it is still, this very night, being made.
